38. Widemouth Bay

Widemouth Bay is on the north east coast of Cornwall. This beach is west facing. Running north-south.

The area is split into two, north and south of the Cornwall Council car park. This car park is on levelled sand dune.

A small stream lies to the north side of the car park, separating the dunes to the north. Dunes lie adjacent to the main road, Marine Drive. There appears to be new dune areas, encouraged by old Xmas trees planted to catch sand. There also appears to be a recently reclaimed dune area, as evidenced by a half-buried old hut.

The north side of the dune terminates at a sandstone bluff with isolated glacial Head deposits. Some of the cliffs exhibit a spectacularly folded geology.

The sand is coarse with around 40% shell, 40% slate and 20% quartz.

The beach is scattered with medium to large cobbles. The road is protected by rock armour in places.

The beach slopes up to the dunes at around 10-15 degree slope.

South of the Council car park, to the café car park to the south, the dunes are largely disconnected from the beach, with no discernible active face other than occasional connections to the beach. The lifeguard station is in a vulnerable location.

There is some dune vegetation but with a lot of maritime grass, scrub and Sea Buckthorn.

On the southern side there are also old WW2 anti-tank concrete blocks supplementing the sea wall and a mix of sea defences.
